from the artistic director

Hello

My new work Seeing Through Darkness has opened at the Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA).
I am so proud of our dancers! To see them working together as a professional team in Seeing Through Darkness is an absolute delight. They are performing brilliantly throughout this extended season.

Restless Dancer Michael Hodyl will be performing his solo work Ricky and Me (inspired by Ricky Martin) at Australian Dance Theatre’s Odeon Theatre in Norwood on 1st October. This is part of ADT’s Smallest Stage in the World season of solo works performed on 2m x 2m square stages. The filmed version of Ricky and Me is also part of the Focus on Ability Short Film Festival. Please go online and vote for it!

Thank you.
Michelle Ryan Artistic Director

The New Restless Work
Seeing Through Darkness at the Art Galley of South Australia (AGSA) has been a huge hit with audiences.

People have been really moved by the quality of the work, by the superb skills of the dancers and by the brilliant design. Geoff Cobham’s lighting throws large, dramatic and many-coloured shadows of the dancers across the gallery walls, with evocative music by Hilary Kleinig and Emily Tulloch.

The critical response has been excellent: Peter Burdon writing in the Advertiser says that this:
significant piece makes the strongest possible claim for the restoration of full funding to this nationally and internationally important ensemble.
Maggie Tonkin for Dance Australia writes:
never have the Restless dancers looked so good: on this occasion [the dancers] performed with a level of technical accomplishment and sense of ensemble that is truly impressive.

And audience members have been moved to tears and effusive in their praise:

  • moving, complex and most of all, joyful.
  • Such a stunning work! The amazing lighting, simple and powerful movements.
  • It is rare in any world, rare in the critical incision of art, that what is achieved has the poise, the cutting to the quick, the fluidity and beyond-darkness sparkle of perfection. I don’t say this lightly. There was depth of knowledge about marrying concept so thoroughly to performance that was uncanny, as if effortless, the height of the dancers, their shapes, their movements, faultless, so close, touching, not a foot wrong, every gesture, movements that came together then separated, forming tableaux at specific times like giants shadowed on the wall behind.

Seeing through Darkness is an immersive experience that is both a participatory exhibition and a 17 minute performance, bringing together elements of dance, music, lighting design and moving image. Collaborating with lighting designer Geoff Cobham, artist and designer Meg Wilson, and musicians: Hilary Kleinig and Emily Tulloch, Michelle Ryan has created a piece for six dancers based on the gestures of figures in French Expressionist painter Georges Rouault’s series of prints entitled: Miserere

The exhibition and performance Seeing through Darkness comprises nine of Rouault’s works and a performance space activated by the dancers during the live performances. Outside of performance times visitors can transform the space with their own shadow, cast in vibrant colour in overlapping arcs on gallery walls. They can also see this edited version of the performance projected on the wall.

The exhibition runs until Sunday 1st November.

Help Restless survive the Australia Council Funding Cuts

It is with bold ambition we will strive to raise $1.5 million dollars over the next four years to continue the brilliant work of our dancers.  Every donation makes a significant impact on our touring ambitions and the future of our company.

The legacy of the community raised funding will be seen as Australians backing professional career pathways for dancers with disability. These dancers become mentors and an inspiration to younger people with disability to take part in our programs, and together, we become ambassadors for Australia and its commitment to the art of ability.
