issue no. 87 (Workshops Item corrected)

from the artistic director

Hello

We are sending this out again because there was an error in the Workshops item. It said that we were still working virtually but we have returned to working face to face at Restless. Apologies for any confusion.

It seems strange that with the pandemic swirling around the world and forcing inactivity onto people, here at Restless we have been able to continue our work in a safe environment.

Moving swiftly to an online platform at the beginning of the outbreak, has allowed us to continue rehearsing and it is with great pleasure we are presenting my new work: Seeing Through Darkness at the Art Gallery of South Australia opening on 4th September – 2 October.

Due to the restrictions in place the audience numbers are very limited, get in quick and book your place now.

I look forward to seeing you at the gallery!
Michelle Ryan Artistic Director

BOOK HERE

There is an unusual beauty to the work of Georges Rouault. The imperfect form of the body and the troubled soul of the work, resonates with how people with disability can feel and be perceived. Some may be confronted while others many see beauty in difference.” Michelle Ryan

Seeing through Darkness is an immersive experience that is both a participatory exhibition and a 15 minute performance, bringing together dance, music, lighting design and moving image. Collaborating with lighting designer Geoff Cobham, artist and designer Meg Wilson, and musicians from Hilary Kleinig and Emily Tulloch, Michelle Ryan has created a piece for six dancers based on the gestures of figures in Rouault’s Miserere.

The exhibition and performance Seeing through Darkness comprises Rouault’s nine works and a performance space activated by dancers. Outside performance times visitors can transform the space with their own shadow, cast in vibrant colour in overlapping arcs on gallery walls.

Help Restless survive the Australia Council Funding Cuts

It is with bold ambition we will strive to raise $1.5 million dollars over the next four years to continue the brilliant work of our dancers.  Every donation makes a significant impact on our touring ambitions and the future of our company.

The legacy of the community raised funding will be seen as Australians backing professional career pathways for dancers with disability. These dancers become mentors and an inspiration to younger people with disability to take part in our programs, and together, we become ambassadors for Australia and its commitment to the art of ability.
