from the artistic director
Hello

Restless has been very busy over the last few weeks creating new work and exploring new projects and there are some exciting developments coming up.

Meryl Tankard will return to Restless for a week in early October to continue working on Zizanie which will premiere in early 2019. The project really began to take shape while she was her for four weeks in July. Since then the rest of the creative team (associate artist and videographer Regis Lansac, set and costume designer Jonathon Oxlade, lighting designer/AV Chris Petridis and sound designer Luke Smiles) have been adding original and astonishing dimensions to the work. Zizanie is unlike anything Restless has done before.

Restless was approached by the Adelaide Film Festival in February this year to work with acclaimed UK multimedia, performance and installation artist Sue Austin on an extraordinary event called Creating the Spectacle. This will happen around and in the North Adelaide Aquatic Centre’s pool on 18 and 19 October. Yes, in the pool as well! Sue Austin is a wheelchair user who performs underwater.

We were saddened last month to say goodbye to our Development Manager, Belinda Hellyer. Belinda has done some wonderful work for the company during the three years that she spent as part of the Restless team. We wish her all the very best in her future endeavours, including we hope brilliant success with her wonderful line of unique and yummy teas: Brewed by Belinda.

Thank you.
Michelle Ryan Artistic Director

Creating the Spectacle with Adelaide Film Festival

Restless have been invited  by Adelaide Film Festival to create and perform a new work choreographed by Michelle Ryan. The opportunity has enabled Michelle to continue her fascination with creating site specific work. Michelle says: “The North Adelaide Aquatic Centre is a fabulous venue to showcase 12 amazing Restless dancers for Creating the Spectacle.”
North Adelaide Aquatic Centre will play host to a live performance art event like nothing ever seen in Australia. As the centrepiece of the 2018 Adelaide Film Festival, acclaimed UK multimedia, performance and installation artist Sue Austin will team up with Restless to stage the southern hemisphere premiere of Creating the Spectacle.
Austin has invented a world-first, self-propelled underwater wheelchair for the underwater, live-art and film event. Viewers are able to watch the performance underwater in scuba gear or poolside via a video screen. Held over two nights: October 18 and 19. Tickets are available at adelaidefilmfestival.org

Lions Scholarships
Scholarships for Restless Dancers
The Lions Club of Glenside have renewed their funding for scholarships for members of the Restless Youth Ensemble and our Seniors group. The Lions have been very generous in assisting some of the Restless dancers whose circumstances mean that they struggle to realise their passion for dance through Restless. We applaud the Lions for their vision in providing this support that enables disadvantaged young people to be included.

Carclew House

Arts Funding Changes

Carclew moved to the Department for Education
Substantial changes to arts funding arrangements have been initiated by the Marshall Government.
Restless began as a project of Carclew in 1991 and at that time South Australia was the only Australian State to have a dedicated funding pool for Youth Arts. Carclew has had a long and proud history of groundbreaking developments in Youth Arts.
Restless still receives the bulk of its State Operational Funding through Carclew. We have been assured by Carclew that even though they are now part of the Department for Education, there should not be any major impacts on the company as a result of the move.

Development Manager
We were saddened last month to say goodbye to our Development Manager, Belinda Hellyer. She packed a lot of successes into her three years with the company including two very successful Creative Partnerships Australia Plus1 matched funding campaigns: Give Me Five and Restless Goes Global which together raised over $150,000 for the company. She also helped to establish our Donor Circle.
Belinda brought many international contacts with her to Restless and was integral to many of the recent marketing initiatives. She has attended two APAMs in Brisbane and two Made in Adelaide events at Edinburgh Festival as well as visiting London and Switzerland to help establish contacts for future tours by Restless.
Belinda wrote several successful funding applications and she also set a new benchmark for the company with the diligence and care that she exercised in the stewardship of the donor base that she helped to establish.
Restless will be advertising the position of Development Manager early next year.

Restless Going Global

CINARS Logo

National and International Marketing Initiatives
Restless continues to explore marketing opportunities for both Intimate Space and Zizanie. Michelle Ryan and Roz Hervey will attend the Queensland Touring Showcase in Brisbane in late October. Queensland Touring Showcase is an important annual event for artists, producers, presenters, venues and key industry players across the Queensland touring network to come together and exchange ideas, discuss new opportunities, plan and collaborate.
In early November Michelle and Roz will attend CINARS in Montreal, Canada. This is the first visit to CINARS by Restless staff and is a terrific opportunity to scope for future touring prospects in Canada.
Restless gratefully acknowledges the support of Carclew, the James and Diana Ramsay Foundation and the Sydney Myer Fund in making these marketing trips possible.
