from the artistic director
Hello

This is the first newsletter for 2019 so, Happy New Year to everyone! Even though it’s March already.

We have another busy and exciting year ahead for Restless. We kick off of course in just two weeks with the world premiere of Zizanie directed by the amazing Meryl Tankard in the Adelaide Festival. What an extraordinary production this will be. We always knew that Meryl would make a distinctive, highly original work with the Restless dancers; the result is simply sensational!

Seats in the Space Theatre in the Adelaide Festival Centre are limited so make sure to book early as the season is sure to sell out.

I would like to congratulate Antony Hamilton on his recent appointment as Co-Artistic Director of Chunky Move in Melbourne. A very well deserved appointment. Last year we had a visit from Antony to work with our dancers as the first step in making a new work in collaboration with the UK based Candoco Dance Company. We are delighted that this project has now become a three way collaboration between Restless, Candoco and Chunky. In May the first week-long Creative Development for the project will take place in Warwick (UK).

Later in the year we will also be doing a Creative Development for a new work that I am making for Restless called: Seeing Through Darkness. This will be presented at the Art Gallery of SA in 2020. I am very excited to be working with the Zephyr Quartet to develop the music and with Geoff Cobham on the design.

Thank you.
Michelle Ryan Artistic Director

Meryl Tankard’s Adelaide Festival work for Restless

We are excited that Zizanie will premiere in the Adelaide Festival in two weeks!
Meryl first met the Restless dancers in late 2016 and has developed the work through a number of creative developments since then.

The French word: zizanie can mean discord, mischief, chaos, messing about!
The story is about a cranky old man who decides to ‘rid the world of fun’ because he doesn’t know how to laugh. Can he learn to embrace the Zizanie and discover fun?

Restless is very fortunate to have a brilliant team or creative artists to support the making of this delightful work for audiences aged 7+:
Associate Artist and Videography – Regis Lansac
Set and Costume Design – Jonathon Oxlade
Lighting Design/AV – Chris Petridis
Sound design – Luke Smiles

Candoco, Restless & Chunky Move

Antony Hamilton
Stunning new 3 way Collaboration

Restless has been talking with the UK based Candoco Dance Company for several months about a collaborating on a new work choreographed by Antony Hamilton. We are delighted that Antony was recently appointed Co-Artistic Director of Chunky Move who are based in Melbourne. The project is now a three way collaboration.

It is just brilliant that Britain and Australia’s leading dance companies working with dancers with disability will be partnering with Chunky Move – one of the country’s most innovative, awarded and internationally recognised performing arts companies.

The first Creative Development for the work will take place at the Warwick Arts Centre (UK) for a week in May this year. At this stage it is envisioned that the work will feature three Restless dancers (Chris Dyke, Jianna Georgiou and Michael Hodyl), two Chunky Move dancers and seven Candoco dancers.

We are hoping that the work will premiere in 2021 as part of the Coventry UK City of Culture celebrations.

Seeing Through Darkness

Art Gallery of SA

New Work by Michelle Ryan
Michelle Ryan has already begun to develop her next new work for Restless. She will direct an initial Creative Development of Seeing Through Darkness, which will premiere in the Art Gallery of South Australia in 2020. The work is inspired by the paintings and drawings of Georges Rouault.

Georges Rouault was a French artist whose work melded Fauvism and Expressionism with its jewel-like tones and bold graphic lines. He produced resonating portraits, landscapes, religious scenes, and still lifes. Some works by the artist form part of the Art Gallery’s collection.

“There is an unusual beauty to the work of Georges Rouault. The imperfect form of the body and the troubled soul of the work, resonates with how people with disability can feel and be perceived.  Some may be confronted while others may see beauty and difference.”  Michelle Ryan

The award-winning Geoff Cobham will design a lighting installation in the Gallery for the work. The production will be designed by Meg Wilson, who produced such a stunning design for Intimate Space. Restless will collaborate with the wonderful, Adelaide based, Zephyr Quartet who will provide original music for the work.
