from the artistic director
Hello

Well, what an extraordinary success Zizanie was! The dancers were brilliant, the production amazing and the reviews ecstatic. I was extremely proud of the way the dancers rose to the challenges of the occasion and produced such wonderful work.

Zizanie has been made with touring in mind and it is part of our long-term plans to tour more of our work nationally and internationally. As part of this goal Restless is also starting to collaborate with leading dance companies from around the world. We fly out to the UK in mid May for the next stage of the exciting collaboration with Chunky Move and Candoco Dance Company. To collaborate successfully with these companies Restless has started a new initiative called The Company with training for dancers two days per week.

As part of a strategic review of the company’s work we have also refreshed the workshop programs and given new names to some of them. The Youth Ensemble is now known as Impulse and our wonderful Seniors group has become Junction. The new names reflect the revitalisation of the programs and their roles within the company structure as we move forward.

Thank you.
Michelle Ryan Artistic Director

Meryl Tankard’s Adelaide Festival work for Restless

Zizanie by Meryl Tankard was a wonderful success for the company and received rave reviews.
The high profile creative team led by Director Meryl Tankard produced some wonderful results: the beautiful images, stunning designs, magical videography and a lovely aural landscape. These all came together in magical ways to produce a work of wonder and power:

A show of beauty and perfection.   The Advertiser

Imaginative, exhilarating, life-affirming and a little zany   InDaily

Zizanie is an intoxicating, utterly delightful visual and aural cornucopia of pure, unadulterated joy.   Limelight

Zizanie was the second Adelaide Festival show in three years by Restless and the show chalked up a series of great achievements:

  • We continued to develop new Festival oriented audiences
  • The dancers had fantastic professional development opportunities. They increased their range of skills and handled the complex creative environment with equanimity and aplomb
  • It was the most technically challenging show we have ever presented
  • We added a new high quality touring product to offer to presenters

Zizanie saw Restless make significant progress in terms of the company’s Vision and Mission:
VISION
Restless artists invigorate, influence and diversify Australian dance
MISSION
Create and present unexpectedly real dance theatre nationally and internationally, that is collaboratively devised, inclusive and informed by disability.

Rewards for the Tribe

Photography by Antony Hamilton
Candoco Dance Company and Chunky Move Collaboration

As announced in the last newsletter, Melbourne based choreographer Antony Hamilton has been appointed Artistic Director of Chunky Move. And this means that our exciting new collaboration with UK based Candoco Dance Company has become a three way collaboration also involving Chunky Move.

This project has just completed its first stage of development which saw Antony accompanied by two Chunky Move dancers (Cody Lavery and Benjamin Hancock) involved in a week long development at Restless (6th – 10th May) This involved three Restless dancers Chris Dyke, Jianna Georgiou and Michael Hodyl.

Following this the whole team, accompanied by Michelle Ryan and Roz Hervey from Restless will fly to the UK for another week long development with seven Candoco dancers. (May 20th – 24th). This will take place at Warwick Arts Centre.

We are working towards Rewards for The Tribe (working title) premiering in 2021 as part of the Coventry UK City of Culture celebrations.

The Company

Larissa McGowan

New Training at Restless
This new two days per week training initiative is led by Larissa McGowan and Michelle Ryan. Restless is indeed fortunate to have someone of Larissa’s experience and talent to co-lead this program.
The Company has started with a core of four dancers: Chris Dyke, Jianna Georgiou, Michael Hodyl and Michael Noble. Restless may include other dancers and trainers in the program from time to time. The progress that the dancers have made in just a few weeks of intensive work with the brilliant Larissa McGowan has been remarkable.

Revamp for Workshop Programs

Starting The Company has also led us to take a fresh look at the regular workshop programs that we run, with some new names to reflect this refreshment:

Impulse

Impulse is the new name for the Youth Ensemble. This group of young people with and without disability will continue to meet once a week for training and skills development. Membership of Impulse will continue to be by invitation only. Restless may ask members of Impulse to perform in company productions from time to time.

Junction
Junction is the new name for the Seniors group of dancers who have danced in previous Restless productions and who have graduated from Impulse. Junction members will continue to meet once a week. The program supports these experienced artists as independent makers by providing skills development in the creation of new work.

Central and Links will continue unchanged as our open access workshops. See below.
