Kathryn Hall

Kathryn Hall is an emerging performer and writer from Adelaide, South Australia, who lives with cerebral palsy. Through her powerful storytelling and innovative artistry, Kathryn has carved a distinctive path in the independent arts scene.

Her critically acclaimed one-woman show, Sheltered, is an autobiographical rollercoaster that masterfully blends comedy, drama, puppetry, and a special quilt. The production takes audiences on a journey through Kathryn’s experiences of finding adulthood in a youth shelter while navigating life with cerebral palsy. First performed at the Adelaide Fringe in 2022, Sheltered continued to evolve, earning the Best Theatre Award during Adelaide Fringe Week One in 2023, as well as the coveted Adelaide Fringe Access Award.

In preparation for her East Coast tour of Sheltered, Kathryn participated in the Restless Dance Theatre’s Artist in Residence program. Collaborating with her director, Andi Snelling, Kathryn utilised the program’s dedicated resources to refine her work. The residency culminated in an exclusive showcase for Restless staff and guests, including Disability Arts ambassador PJ Rose. The event’s feedback and Q&A session fostered an invaluable exchange of ideas, supporting Kathryn’s growth as a performer.

Reflecting on her residency, Kathryn shared:

“Thank you for allowing me to utilise the Restless rehearsal space in the lead-up to my East Coast tour of Sheltered. I was able to rehearse for three afternoons in the rehearsal space, which was a great opportunity to get my show back in my body.”

The tour began with a standout performance at the Undercover Artist Festival in Brisbane, where Sheltered received widespread acclaim for its emotive storytelling and uplifting, joyful moments. Kathryn’s ability to connect with audiences continued at the Melbourne Fringe Festival, where Sheltered garnered a Best Theatre Award nomination, the Access & Inclusion Award, and two Judges’ Picks, further solidifying her reputation as a trailblazer in disability-inclusive theatre.

Most recently, Kathryn performed in HIGH at the Space Theatre in September 2024.

Kathryn’s journey exemplifies the power of independent Australian artists to create work that is innovative, inclusive, and transformative. Programs like the Restless Artist in Residence continue to support local talent, providing artists like Kathryn the space and resources to thrive and inspire.
