Carol Wellman Kelly

With a zest for life and a passion for dance, theatre, puppetry and musicals, Carol brings 34 years of professional experience to her work with Restless Dance Theatre.

Her professional practice includes dance performance, teaching, choreographing, directing, facilitating and management and has taken her to many parts of the globe.

Carol received a BA in Dance, Performance and Teaching from the Victorian College of Arts and was a member of 2 Dance Plus WA (Buzz Dance Theatre), Chrissie Parrott Dance Collective WA and Dance North QLD before heading to London for seven years to work as a dancer with choreographers on performance projects in the UK and Europe.

Her commitment to the power of Dance in Education saw her engaged with the education outreach units of London Contemporary Dance Company, Rambert Dance Company and Richard Alston Dance Company. Whilst in London, Carol worked consistently as a performer and workshop leader and significantly with Green Candle Dance Company where the focus is on expressing diversity through dance and music and touring work to reach remote or marginalised populations. She also participated in workshops with Adam Benjamin founder of Candoco and facilitated workshops for Candoco foundation program at Saddlers Wells Theatre.

Returning to Australia, Carol became Assistant Director for Australian Dance Theatre (ADT) along with Artistic Director, Garry Stewart. For seven years (with one year away as Artistic Director of Buzz Dance Theatre in 2002) she toured with ADT across Europe, UK, Asia and the USA between 2000 and 2008.

Since then Carol has been a freelance dance/theatre artist working across genres with a wide variety of participants and roles including mentor and artistic advisor for independent choreographers and dancers, guest lecturer and assessor for University Dance and Drama departments in Australia and NZ and Board member for Restless Dance Theatre, Ausdance SA and Ausdance National as well as State and Federal funding bodies.

Carol choreographed the Helpmann award winning musicals Pinocchio and Rumpelstiltskin (Windmill Theatre Company) which presented in NYC 2014 and London 2018 respectively.

Carol has been involved with Restless Dance Theatre in different roles since 2005 when ADT and Restless collaborated on the performance project Vocabulary. She project managed Debut 5 and Next of Kin, taught on most of the Restless workshop programs, and was assistant to Michelle with South Australian School for Vision Impaired (SASVI) dance programs, St Ignatius College humanities project and assisted on tour in the performance preparation of Intimate Space for The Seoul Street Festival in September 2019.

Carol is dedicated to creating access to the arts for all and is a trained Audio Describer for people with visual impairment. Carol knows that life is enriched through Dance and the arts and wants everyone to experience this.
