Sustenance

Sustenance reminds us that we are not complete, that our souls need to be nourished. That if we don’t risk, we don’t learn. If we don’t ask ourselves the hard questions then we can’t begin to find the answers. We need to listen to not only ourselves but to those around us, for if we do, we will begin to realise we are not alone. We all want and desire and need things in our lives, and it’s the struggle to know what we really need and who we are, that makes our life richer and makes us whole.

Sustenance is set in that familiar place in our mind where we go to take time out, to clear our thoughts and listen to who we are at that moment in time. We play so many roles in life that sometimes it is hard to keep up. How we perceive ourselves, how we are perceived can shift in a second.

Discovering what makes us unique, what drives us and what we must have in order to sustain ourselves is an unpredictable cycle.

Treasure it!

Project Background:

Sustenance began as a community cultural development workshop project in August 2004. Employment service organisations and project partners, Personnel Employment and Community Bridging Services, interviewed and referred clients who were interested in new employment opportunities. These 15 – 26 year old job-seekers participated in a series of workshops led by Kat Worth, Daisy Brown, Clare Coulter, James Bull and Anastasia Retallack. The workshops were aimed at providing these young people with a work experience opportunity in the arts. The workshops ran concurrently with Restless’ youth ensemble, exploring the similar themes of sustaining our lives practically, emotionally and creatively.

Subsequently three of these participants were asked to join the Youth Ensemble to join Kat Worth and Daisy Brown in the creation of the performance.

Reviews:
“Sustenance is not a peaceful work. Resistance is a central element of the choreography. Worth and Brown offer us a vision not so much of pschological dysfunction when it comes to facing up to the effort seeking sustenance takes, but of the unspoken, almost subconscious resistance to change that seems to come with the process.” – David O’Brien  Ausdance Magazine, May 2005
